Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 2026
Introduction
Morning Mercies ("we," "our," or "the App") respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using the App, you agree to the practices described in this policy.
Morning Mercies has no server or backend. We do not operate our own servers and your journal content is never transmitted to us. All personal data stays on your device or within Apple's iCloud infrastructure.
Information We Collect
We collect the following information to provide and improve the App:
Information you provide:
- Name — Entered during onboarding for personalization within the App
- Age range — Selected during onboarding from predefined ranges (e.g. 18–24, 25–34). Used for product analytics.
- Gender — Selected during onboarding. Used for product analytics.
- Goals — Selected during onboarding (e.g. "Deepen my faith," "Build a daily habit"). Used for product analytics.
- Journal entries — The text content you write during daily reflections
- Mood selections — Your chosen mood for each entry (e.g. grateful, hopeful, peaceful, joyful, reflective)
Information collected automatically:
- App usage events — Actions you take in the App such as completing onboarding, creating entries, exporting entries, purchasing a subscription, and creating or restoring backups. These events include metadata such as word count, export format, and plan type — but never your journal text.
- Crash reports and error logs — Stack traces and device context when the App encounters an error, used to diagnose and fix bugs
- Device identifiers — Anonymous identifiers generated by the operating system, used by our analytics and subscription services
- Subscription status — Whether you have an active subscription or trial, the plan type, and expiration date, managed by RevenueCat and Apple
How We Store Your Data
Local storage. Your journal entries, mood selections, streak data, and profile information are stored locally on your device in a SQLite database and local key-value storage. This data is not encrypted by the App itself but is protected by your device's built-in security (passcode, Face ID, etc.).
iCloud backup (Premium feature). If you enable iCloud backup, the App stores a copy of your journal entries, streak data, profile information, and preferences in your personal iCloud container as a JSON file. This data is encrypted by Apple's iCloud infrastructure. We do not have access to your iCloud data. Backups sync automatically when the App is in the background.
No server storage. We do not operate servers that store your personal data. Your journal content never leaves your device except through Apple's iCloud service if you choose to enable it.
Third-Party Services
The App uses the following third-party services. Each processes data according to their own privacy policies:
- PostHog (hosted in the EU) — Product analytics. Receives app usage events, and during onboarding, your age range, gender, and goals are associated with an anonymous device profile. PostHog does not receive your name, journal content, or any other personal text you enter. PostHog Privacy Policy
- Sentry (hosted in the EU) — Error and crash monitoring. Receives crash reports including stack traces, device type, and app state at the time of the error. Sentry does not receive your journal content. Sentry Privacy Policy
- RevenueCat — Subscription and in-app purchase management. Receives purchase receipts, subscription status, and anonymous device identifiers from Apple. RevenueCat does not receive your name, journal content, or profile data. RevenueCat Privacy Policy
- Apple iCloud — Optional encrypted cloud backup. If enabled, receives a copy of your journal entries, profile, and preferences. Governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Expo Updates — Over-the-air app update delivery. Receives your app version and configuration to check for updates. Does not receive personal data. Expo Privacy Policy
Notifications
If you grant notification permission, the App schedules local notifications on your device to remind you to journal and to alert you before a free trial ends. These notifications are entirely local — no push notification tokens are sent to our servers or any third party. You can disable notifications at any time in your device's Settings.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, trade, or share your personal data with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes. We do not use your data for ad targeting. The App does not contain any advertising.
Data shared with the third-party services listed above is limited to what is necessary for their function (analytics, crash reporting, subscription management). Your journal content is never shared with any third party.
Data Retention and Deletion
Local data persists on your device until you explicitly delete it. The App provides a "Delete All My Data" option in Settings that permanently removes all journal entries, profile information, streak data, preferences, scheduled notifications, and your iCloud backup file.
Uninstalling the App removes all local data from your device. Your iCloud backup file will remain in your iCloud storage until you delete it via the App's delete feature or manage it through iCloud settings.
Analytics and crash data held by PostHog and Sentry is retained according to their respective data retention policies. This data is tied to anonymous device identifiers, not to your name or personal identity.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Delete all your data using the "Delete All My Data" feature in the App's Settings, which removes local data, scheduled notifications, and your iCloud backup
- Disable iCloud backup in the App's settings at any time
- Disable notifications in your device's Settings
- Export your journal entries as PDF or text files to keep a personal copy (Premium feature)
- Request information about data we process on your behalf by contacting us
Children's Privacy
Morning Mercies is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has used the App and provided personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete such information.
Tracking
Morning Mercies does not track you across other apps or websites. We do not use Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA), and the App does not participate in any advertising network. You will never see the "Allow this app to track your activity?" prompt because we simply don't track.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will indicate the date of the most recent revision at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
